Tips and strategies for how to get a job as a phlebotomist

The duties of a phlebotomist are medical; therefore there is generally some sort of degree or certificate required. Getting a job as a phlebotomist is easy if you look in the right areas. The top companies that hire phlebotomists include Quest Diagnostics, Labcorp of America, Lab Corp., Dynacare Laboratories, and Examone. Industries that are generally in need of phlebotomists include hospitals, the healthcare industry, professional analytical and laboratory services, healthcare services, and the blood collection industry.

The career field of phlebotomy is dominated by women. Not necessarily saying that men will not be hired for the job, but most likely just the fact that most men do not seek this job out. Around 85 percent of the workforce is women while a mere 15 percent is men. Around 53 percent of the phlebotomy workforce has worked for one to four years. Being the largest amount out there, it would probably be harder for you to get a job if you have worked longer. Employers want new phlebotomists in order to have someone to fill in for the others as they start to wear off. You are most likely to get the job with an associate’s degree, which also provides with being able to earn the highest hourly salary.

Becoming a certified phlebotomist or earning a technical certificate as a phlebotomy technician provide you with being able to earn a slightly lower salary, while being a certified phlebotomy technician doesn’t leave you with a chance of earning a very high hourly salary. Different areas have a higher demand for phlebotomists. If you live around an area that has a high demand for phlebotomists, or are willing to move to one of these areas, you have a higher chance of finding a job. Some states have a high demand for the career. Texas, California, Florida , Illinois, Georgia, New York, and New Jersey all have high demands for phlebotomists.

Not only do different states have different demands for phlebotomists, but so do different cities. Areas that are in need of phlebotomists are mainly large cities, or any other large urban areas. The need for phlebotomists is basic supply and demand. The more people, the more phlebotomists will be needed. Therefore in large cities, numerous amounts of phlebotomists will be needed due to the numerous amounts of people compared to a smaller suburban or rural area where there are not many people and the demand for phlebotomists is low. Your resumé is also very important. Make sure it is neat and professional, free of any spelling or grammar errors. Follow up! This shows the employer that you are truly interested in working for their company, and that you are dedicated to whatever you set your mind to.
