You have probably wondered; What are the duties of Duties and Responsibilities of a phlebotomist? Let’s see what a phlebotomist does all day. Let see who a Phlebotomist is and what he or she does. A Phlebotomist is a person who extracts blood from patients for medical examination and further clinical tests. Simply, a phlebotomist is someone who must pierce into the vein of their patients and takeout small amounts of their blood. Phlebotomy is the process of completing this task. Does this make you squeamish? No. Read on. Phlebotomy is much more than just drawing blood samples.

The duties of Phlebotomists; The most important function of a Phlebotomist is to obtain and properly handle human blood. The basic duty of a phlebotomist includes extracting blood samples from the patients and cataloging them correctly for analysis in a laboratory.

Critical Responsibilities of Phlebotomists

The duties of a phlebotomist include collecting blood samples and other fluids from his patients under the direction of a licensed physician or other health care professional. The practice generally involves aseptically finding a vein suitable for blood extraction from the patient. Once a vein is located and punctured observing aseptic techniques with a needle or single use lancet, the phlebotomist collects blood in sample tubes which are vacuum sealed with a rubber stopper, or micro-collection tubes and may or may not include clot activators a gel for plasma separation or the like. The tube may also include no reactive agent or coagulant and simply be used for purposes of collection and storage of the sample.

Phlebotomists are exposed to contaminants and blood borne diseases. The duties of a phlebotomist dictate that he exercises great caution and expertise in executing his daily chores. This is very critical to his own safety and the safety of his patients. It is also the duty of a phlebotomist to make sure that all the equipment and instruments that are used are sterile.

The duties of a Phlebotomist:

The duties of a phlebotomist do not end there. Once the required samples have been collected, phlebotomists must label the relevant containers with all the required information about the patient including the name and identification. Subsequently,  a phlebotomist must complete all the paperwork that can be used to trace the route of the sample from the point of collection through to the final diagnosis. The next step is the proper disposal of blood or fluid samples. Any mistake in the work of a phlebotomist can cause consequences that may range from erroneous diagnosis to contamination that can become fatal.

Other Duties of Phlebotomists; Apart from the above, phlebotomists, in some cases, may also be required to conduct home visits. Phlebotomists are also responsible for transporting blood and fluid samples from extraction sites to the laboratory. In a few cases, phlebotomists may also be responsible for performing specific functions for processing samples of blood for further analysis. The duties of a phlebotomist also include training other phlebotomists in the establishment, in sample collection, relevant paperwork and follow up. Phlebotomists working in a laboratory have an added responsibility to ensure that blood and fluid samples are analyzed correctly. This can be done by enforcement of quality control and preventive safety measures against contamination.

The duties of a Phlebotomist are, in most cases, scheduled and not performed in a emergency. Phlebotomists usually work in shift matching regular 9 to five office hours. No other field in medical profession offers such luxury. Phlebotomists must work with patients belonging to every age group. These patients may feel uncomfortable at the prospect of having blood extracted from their bodies. It is also one of the duties of a Phlebotomist to put his patients at ease.
