Requirements for Phlebotomy Certification?

Today, the demand for phlebotomist has increased in all states as more baby boomers reach the age of retirement. Nurses and doctors have other duties to perform and may not get the time to draw blood, run blood tests and blood analysis. This is the role that a phlebotomist fulfills. In the United States, not all states require a phlebotomy certification. However, it is practically impossible for a person to get a job without proper certification.

Organizations that Offer Phlebotomy Certification – Requirements for Phlebotomy Certification. In the United States, there are three main organizations that certify phlebotomists. These organizations include National Phlebotomy Association, the Association for Phlebotomy Technicians and American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Usually, a person interested in becoming a phlebotomist has to attend an accredited phlebotomy training program. The program will highlight what are the requirements for getting the certification from the three main bodies that oversee the process. Generally, these three organizations have similar requirements for the certification process. A person, who does not have any clinical experience in phlebotomy, must have a GED or high school diploma, 40 hours of classroom instruction in phlebotomy, 120 hours of training in phlebotomy and 100 hours of drawing blood successfully in order to sit for the certification examination held by the certifying bodies.

Today, there are many schools and technical colleges that offer accredited phlebotomy training program, which covers topics like physiology, anatomy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, different methods to draw blood, laboratory safety, behavioral expectations, quality control methods and using computer technology to do analysis and blood work.
