A person who has been trained for drawing blood from human beings and animals in a safe and hygienic manner, is known as a phlebotomist. The blood is primarily collected by a method which is known as venipuncture. Very small quantities of blood are collected by a method known as fingerstick.  A phlebotomist is trained specially for collecting samples of blood from the wrist’s randial artery or antecubital area’s brachial artery. These samples are collected for performing the arterial blood gas test. A phlebotomist must thoroughly make sure that any chances of contamination have been fully taken care of by disposing the medical waste in a proper manner. A phlebotomist also handles fecal and urine samples’ labeling.There are certain specific requirements for someone to become a phlebotomist tech. Phlebotomy technicians or phlebotomists need to complete a course that prepares them for the job in a highly professional manner. An aspiring person who wants to become a phlebotomy tech can also prepare for his / her chosen profession by getting adequately trained in a technical school. Another way of becoming a phlebotomy tech is to attend four years of college and earn an associate’s degree.

The courses a person who wants to become a phlebotomy tech needs to attend – and complete successfully, comprises of Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, Containers Procedures, Microcollection, Specimen Collection, Blood Sampling and patient identification techniques. Other mandatory courses include medical terminology, anatomy & physiology. An aspiring phlebotomist must also get a certificate from an accredited institution. Currently, there are three bodies having the authority to award certification in this field: The American Society of Clinical Pathologists, The American Association of Medical Personnel and The American Medical Technologists. Let’s be realistic. A certificate from an accredited institution does help in securing a rewarding job. Moreover, , there are several employers that do not even consider persons without proper certification. This makes it a mandatory requirement for securing a job in this field. There are certain dispositions required of a person wanting to become a phlebotomy tech. Such a person must be comfortable with taking blood out of other person’s veins. If a person thinks that he or she will freak out during such a process, then he or she must consider entering this field.
