Phlebotomy refers to the act that involves drawing or removing of blood from the circulatory system through a cut in some parts of the body to obtain a sample for analysis and diagnosis. It is commonly done as part of the patient’s treatment for certain blood disorders. A phlebotomist is one who draws blood for analysis or transfusion. A specialist in phlebotomy can be termed as one who has been trained in drawing venous blood for testing or donations. Certified phlebotomy technicians play an important role in helping physicians meet patients needs by handling blood collection and related tasks. There are careers that are related to certified phlebotomy technicians such as medical assistant, nurse, dialysis technician, clinical lab technician and paramedic.

Some of the essentials functions of the phlebotomist include the following:

  • – To perform venipunctures sterile for the collection of a unit of whole blood and to ensure quality products throughout the phlebotomy process.

Training
For one to become a phlebotomist, you will need to attend an accredited phlebotomist training program. This means that the profession should be undertaken by credited institutions to ensure well equipped specialists. The training will help minimize risks such as accidents occurring in the line of duty. Many of the trainings pertaining this profession can be completed in less than two years. The training will equip you with skills such as; being familiar with the human anatomy, blood cells, and several of the other body systems such as the circulatory systems. Medical procedures
To prevent specimen mix-ups from different patients and/or contaminating them, phlebotomist must follow proper medical procedures at all times. It is important for them to become very familiar with their place of employment to ensure efficient and effective medical procedures.

Phlebotomist must be able to interact with all types and ages groups of people. This calls for good communication skills. They should be able to communicate with them freely and educate them on the procedure. Many patients are uncomfortable seeing their blood drawn or any one else for that matter.
